When I started these blue metal versions 10 years ago I had a range of about 10 other pedals, in the meantime I’ve conceived at least 10 times that (which circumvent all the mini critiques of this one). But sometimes you’ve just got to choose a path, and take it.

So I can’t wait to move onto the next phase. Thanks to all who bought, sorry to people who’ve struggled to get replies on my email (spamland). It may not be the total end of production of this pedal, but probably is the end of this large blue version of the “Judder”.

That’s 150 through hole components for each circuit board, 5 pots, 7 switches, and testing what is in effect 3 or 4 circuits in one (Echo, LFO, Envelope Follower etc.), all using guitar pedal topology and fine tuning each one individually in 3 places.

The pedal went temporarily out of stock this morning, but there are these 4 left at the sale price until Wednesday, they are the ones photo’d here ⬆️

They are 4 leftover cases from the 2022 release that used symbols instead of words, the circuit inside is identical to those being sold this year.

The pedals don’t go up for sale until they’re complete and in their packaging ready to go - in the past orders have swamped in and people have had to wait 6 weeks which is no fun for anyone. The current blue ones (the latest ones with wording on them) are going back in stock on Wednesday, plus a few random colour ones! (See stories)

It’s Mothering Sunday here in the UK. This is m

It’s Mothering Sunday here in the UK.
This is my mum (age 17), a cellist, pianist, teacher and mother to 3 boys, of which I am the youngest.

She was taught piano and cello by her Dad, a pianist, conductor, and organist with the Holy Trinity Church who seemingly collected Trinity College Music Diplomas. She carried that forward, taught cello and piano and played in the Somerset County Orchestra for 50 years.

This is my most recent recording of her, age 64, selling an old cello that was fit for eBay.

Like everything, it was cool, off the cuff, and done in one take whilst making lunch. I like that she was relaxed at the start, then adjusts to the cello and plays the end well, without going over the top.

Sadly Mum later developed Parkinson’s in 2019 and 4 weeks ago she passed away. A gentle soul with a good sense of humour, witty chat, skills to back it up. She took on the traditional good wife and mum with little hints of irony, mainly because she did it well! We’re very, very lucky and grateful to have been part of her life.

Announcement from Somerset County Orchestra:

I am writing to let you know of the sad news that we received this week. Stella Warren, cellist, has passed away after a short spell in hospital. Stella was one of the longest standing members of the SCO having joined in 1967 and only recently leaving. In 1967, she had just gained the highest marks in Grade 8 cello throughout the UK and received the Hannah Clark prize and also one from Sidney Hollyoak (who is considered the founder of the SCO which he conducted until December 1958). She went on to be awarded LTCL diplomas in both piano and cello, and enjoyed many years of teaching. As well as playing in the SCO, she did a stint as treasurer and enjoyed chamber music with other members of the orchestra.
A previous chair said 'Stella could be counted on to consistently support the orchestra with cheerfulness and goodwill.'

The true bypass version with shielded cabling and

The true bypass version with shielded cabling and sockets for MWFX Judder. This one has a latching footswitch that mechanically bypasses the pedal instead of a hold footswitch.

True bypass sounds identical to the original’s bypass. Not that exciting. Just an added option if people want it. Original is still very transparent, with ideal impedance and importantly no noise.

All orders have now left for Xmas, the shop will be restocking on 1st January and will start sending out after the postal strikes and Christmas rush. Will keep you posted on here with updates over the holidays.

We’re confident of the quiet noise ratio and tra

We’re confident of the quiet noise ratio and transparent signal, so the Judder pedal (pictured) is still on offer without the true bypass option and goes back in stock tomorrow at 18:00 GMT.

That said, we understand the importance of signal path and how great it feels and sounds to have your guitar signal go straight into the amp. So this time there’s a true bypass option available too.

This version in the picture has a high impedance JFET input and low output impedance, helping reduce noise over long cables and large pedalboards and is best suited at the start of your chain. The latching footswitch on the left holds the effect on, and inverts the direction of the momentary footswitch.

This is the true bypass version of the Judder, we’re releasing 10 of these and 15 of the regular version on:
13th December at 6pm GMT.

The other 25 will go on sale on the:
1st January 2023

with another 50 pencilled in for the:
22nd January 2023

Although these will go out on the 14th Dec courier deadline for Europe, US and Canada please don’t feel pressured to buy. It may be wise to wait til after the Christmas rush.

Final share of Germaniums, the best sounding transistors! Although it’s subjective, Mullard (Philips) give good full sound and are reliable. They were made in Holland, Britain and British overseas, but still fairly easy to get old stock in Europe.

These ones are the metal case versions and date from early 60’s, and a few others from Japan and Soviet Union which are much later, lower gain, with subtle differences in sound but higher noise floor and generally not as great (but still ok).

Mullard began making them in glass, see previous posts. A big batch would get made, they’d get tested sorted into types afterwards, and some would come out sensitive enough to react to light. Those ones got picked out and sold as phototransistors which were relatively new and worth more, the rest were painted black. They were marketed for computer use, are less easy to find and the ones we use because they are top quality.

Germanium distorts musically and has a responsive feel when playing guitar through it. Silicon is more abundant, but tends to give a slightly honky/sawtooth sound, or flat. Not that it’s bad and can sound trashy-good/overblown.

People find germanium hard to get sounding good, but after a while the reverse is always true.

There are other types of transistor which distort well and we’re building individual overdrives dedicated to each type, as well as a multi version where you can clearly hear and benefit from the best of four types.

Silicons, JFET’s, MOSFET’s, SCR’s that help make good sounds and have been used lately

The X-10826 are military BC108’s from 1978 which sound rich, importantly they date from around the time that silicon BC108’s replaced germanium’s in many classic fuzz pedals.

JFET’s 2n5457 (and 2n3819) have lower noise than the usual J201’s and lots of exaggerated high frequency response when overdriven.

The 2n7000 MOSFET is a good tube/valve undertones and a strong break up.

And the 2n5060 was just an SCR that proved useful when doing some waveshaping/folding for the later Wave Machine pedal’s that are being redesigned at the moment.

Back to the Ge’s, these old stock germanium tran

Back to the Ge’s, these old stock germanium transistors have low HFE (gain) but also low ICES (leakage/noise), sounded rich in testing, are slightly more modern in production (late 70s) and had noticeably more even order harmonics than other germanium’s and silicons and give a nice natural octave up distortion.

Other effects (Judder, Glitch etc) are in production stages and waiting for cases to arrive. The last few posts are some devices collected since starting out in guitar electronics at University (BA Music Design) in 2004.

Leftover Germanium’s from ages ago (soviet mp10’s), freely available, nice germanium fuzz but not so sweet at low gain, low HFE at 40-60 but also high leakage (more noise, temperature instability, smaller biasing range).

Over the past few months 3 customers asked for rep

Over the past few months 3 customers asked for repairs. They were coincided to do today for a small charge of postage, time and parts. All the pedals are made to be serviced and repairable.

The 2 larger ones had a broken knob each, a quick fix, and the smaller one had a noise issue from a filter capacitor. They all got a clean and tune up of their settings and are headed back to their owners for a cuddle

As production of the next 500 begins, number 500 of the first Judders has arrived back - signed and artworked by Declan McKenna who deserves a lot of praise, especially this week. He has said some very nice things in interview about the pedal, owns a few now and we’re huge fans of him, his music and also his producer James Ford (ever since the wisp ep). If you’re living a cave life I recommend British Bombs as a starting point (pedal is on it too).

He says his art styles not evolved since GCSE’s, I’m going with neo primitive and think the lettering addition is great. Expression Remote cases arrived so I made a few up

Expression Remote cases arrived so I made a few up this morning to send out today.

These are simple expression pedals without the treadle/rocker/wah wah part. For attaching to your guitar, strap, mic stand, spare band member and controlling the sample length (pitch).

It’s a simple bit of electronics to keep it low priced and quick to make (see last photo), basically a 10k ohm resistor with a standard TS Jack output (needn’t be a high quality cable) that’ll work to varying degrees with other devices, but is made for the Judder pedal specifically. Different resistances can be made to order if you like, message or email

They turned out not that easy to build last year (a datasheet error caused problems, supplier issues, new parts, circuit boards etc and resultant backorder pain). Ended up building the rotary switches myself, turned out ok, but time..

No back orders, only on sale when boxed. Hopefully next Monday.

The latest batch sold out quite quickly last night but more are already in production.
Here’s a gutsy attempt at a gut shot of the larger judder pedal.
The blue multi-turn trimmers are for tuning the feedback loop and the modulation depth, and 2 regular trimmers for sample length and sample volume. It’s all off board wired with mPPE wire which is thinner (looks tidier for photos like these hopefully) doesn’t melt and stays put without need for cable ties, keeping them separated to minimise noise and crosstalk from clocks and switching.
